Speculating on the Google Galaxy Nexus II Part 1

Rumor is Google will be building three Nexus phones this year, which should be on sale be the end of the year. One Nexus, to be built by Sony, is rumored to be focus on the camera. A second Nexus, to be built by LG is said to be a waterproof and dust proof Nexus phone. The the third, well it would be the successor of the Google Galaxy Nexus, and is rumored to be built by Samsung.

Windows Phone 8 devices now match the specifications of high end Android phones. The new 4-inch Apple iPhone 5 basically matches the specifications of what a high end 4-inch Android would be like (if high end 4-inch Android phones were still constructed, the smallest high end Android phones these days are 4.3-inches). What should Google do with its next Galaxy Nexus S?

Where Google should maintain the status quo.

4.65-inch display. The 4.65 inch display of the Google Galaxy Nexus, with the onscreen keys is about the equivalent of a 4.4-inch display with dedicated hardware buttons. It is not a monster phone anymore by current Android standards These days, 4.7 to 4.8 inch displays with dedicated hardware buttons are the new Android monster phones. Google could come out with a 5-inch phone with dedicates software keys. This would essentially be a Samsung Galaxy S III with on-screen keys. But I think Google should leave the monster smartphone clash to its OEMs. The large a phone gets, the more it serves a niche market.

Instead Google should focus on building a slightly smaller frame around its current 4.65-inch display. Cut 1-2 mm from the width, and 2-4 mm from the height, and give the same sized display in a smaller package.

1GB of RAM. The Google Galaxy Nexus already has 1 GB of RAM. It could go to 2 GBs just to upstage the Apple iPhone 5 and it Windows Phone rivals. To me this would make little sense. A Nexus phone runs vanilla Android. Much lighter than the OEM versions with TouchWiz, Sense or other interface which eat more RAM.

The Android OS should not evolve to something that needs more than 512 GB of RAM for at least the next version (Key Lime Pie) and not more than 1 GB of RAM for the 2014 version of Android. Google should keep its next Nexus to just 1 GB of RAM. Google should leave the 2 GB frontier to its OEM partners.

The processor. While you now have quad core Kraits and ARM Cortex-A15s being available, for the same reason that Googles Galaxy Nexus need not have 2 GB of RAM, it also does not have to come with the most spectacular processor. The Qualcomms S4 with its dual core Kraits in would be a fine option. If Samsung or Nvidia can get an on-chip LTE solution in their chipsets on time, a Exynos quad or quad core Tegra 3, a quad core chip would be a strong marketing point, though not necessarily better than an Qualcomm S4.

The cheap feeling case. Whether you make a case from aluminum or plastic or some other premium quality material, if you want to remove the last trace of creak in a case, it is easy remove the battery cover. But Android owners expect a user replaceable battery, and a bit of creak is worth having the option to replace batteries or replace it with an extended battery.

So basically, what I am describing here so far is a Google Galaxy Nexus with an updated processor in a trimmed down package. But there are some area where Google should make substantial changes, to one up the competition.

Android 4 2 2 Found Running On A Nexus 4 Review Unit

Out of the blue the Malaysia community site Lowat.net is reportedly having Android 4.2.2 on their Nexus 4 review unit. Earlier provisions show that the device is not a local unit because it comes in 8GB and Malaysia only has the 16GB version. From testing, they were unable to find anything significantly new on the latest build. Additionally the build number of the Nexus 4 running 4.2.2 could not be found online. The conclusion to this is that it is a developer device because the build number includes the words "dev-keys".

Dolphin Browser HD Major Review

As far as mobile browsers go, Dolphin has built up a reputation as one of the best. With a vast range of useful features along with a smooth, gesture-based user interface, it’s claim as the Google Play Store’s number one web browser is not surprising.

The standout quirk of Dolphin is undoubtedly its capacity to create custom gestures. You can, for example, set your device to recognize a heart-shaped gesture as your favorites/bookmarks, or even just set it to load a particular URL. For some, the feature maybe an unnecessary extra, but it does give Dolphin a certain charm only a handful of apps exude.

As well as the gestures, the settings button makes way to reveal the more usual, to-be-expected features, such as selecting your default search engine, font size, whether you want to browse privately, or in desktop mode – which allows you to view webpages in their familiar form as opposed to the scaled-down mobile versions, and we don’t like to see scaled down version of the web now do we?

There’s a nifty ‘night mode’ which, in knowing you’ll need less backlight when it’s dark outside, dims the display in order to conserve battery.

The Webzine feature (similar to Flipboard, for those familiar, but not as pretty), offers fast webpage loading by removing all of the advertisements and fuss, allowing you to just read the bits you’re interested in.

From start to finish, it makes you feel like you’re testing the perfect mobile browser. Any feature you could possibly want or imagine is present, and functioning with aplomb. The native Android and Apple browsers – while each possessing their respective strengths, just don’t measure up to.

It’s absolutely free, and the HD version – designed specifically for the iPad – has also recently been updated, and you can check it out by clicking on the link below. If you’re frustrated with your current browser – or even if you’re not – Dolphin really is the way forward.

For those already using Dolphin, the update brings minor changes and improvements to each version, most of which are design-based.

How to create Password Reset Disc Win 7

In the old days, we can create a password-reset disk to use in case  we forgot  Windows administrator password. But can we do this on a Windows 7 computer with no floppy drive? Yes!
Windows 7 does allow you to make a password-reset disk in advance in case you ever forget your administrator password and do not have it written down. You can now use a portable USB drive instead of a floppy disk.

To get started, you need a spare USB flash drive. Once you have the drive, plug it into a USB port on the computer. Next, go to the Start menu  > Control Panel. Click “User Accounts”. (You can also get there by typing “user” in the search box on the Start menu and selecting User Accounts from the list of results.)

In the pane on the left side of the User Accounts box, click the link for “Create a password reset disk.” When the Forgotten Password Wizard appears, follow the steps to select your USB drive as the place you want to store your information and type in your current password.

Once you have completed the steps, eject the USB drive and store it in safe place. If you do need the drive later to reset your password after a failed attempt at the Windows login box, click O.K. on the “User name and password are incorrect” screen. Then plug in the drive and click the Reset Password option on the next screen to open the Password Reset Wizard.

HTC is still in a downhill slide, posting negative growth numbers quarter after quarter. Today, the company has released its consolidated results for the first quarter of the year and everything is down compared to the same quarter last year. The only positive development is that the companys expenses are lower, too.
Things are looking unchanged compared to the unaudited results we saw lest month. Revenue is 42.8 billion NT$ (USD1.4 billion) while net income was a lowly 85 million NT$ (USD2.8 million).

Motorola Compares The Galaxy S III The Droid Razr HD

As many of you already know the Galaxy S III is the most popular android phone out there now and the Samsung brand is widely know. Motorola in the other hand is one of the android manufacturers which are not so popular but that is going to change as Google has recently bought it and stay tuned for next year to see some effect take on. Today, Motorola on their website and facebook page has uploaded some comparisons between the Droid Razr HD and the Galaxy S III. These include a battery life comparison, build quality, design and 4G LTE speed. The one i most favor is the internet speed test where the catch phrase is "its not easy.

Nvidia Tegra 4 user manual

Nvidia has announced the Tegra 4 which uses four ARM Cortex-A15 cores, along with a fifth battery saver core The design is similar to last years Tegra 3 which uses four ARM Cortex-A9 cores, along with a fifth 500 MHz battery saver core

The performance of the Tegra 4 is supposedly more than double that of the  Tegra 3. But the real speed improved is in the new 72 core Graphics Processing Unit, which are said to be 6x more powerful than the 12 core GPU on Tegra 3.  The Tegra 4 also includes something Nvidia calls the Computational Photography Architecture, which is supposed to speed up camera related functions. All this is achieved while reducing battery consumption by 45%. I am not sure whether the Tegra 4 is based on 28 nanometer or 32 nanometer technology. The Tegra 3 was based on 40 nanometer tech.

All very impressive. One worrisome thing is no System-On-Chip (SoC) LTE. The Tegra 4 adds support for an optional 4G LTE modem, NVIDIAs own Icera i500 chipset. Unfortunately, this is likely to be more power hungry than SoC solutions like the Qualcomm S4.

Spigen Neo Hybrid Samsung Galaxy S4 case hands on

Out of all the cases I checked out last year for the Samsung Galaxy S III, my favorite one was none other than the Spigen Neo Hybrid case, since it offered a decent amount of protection without adding much bulk. With the Galaxy S4, though, Spigen has changed up the recipe just by a smidgen, but the concept is still there with the Spigen Neo Hybrid Samsung Galaxy S4 case.

So what’s different with this new version? For starters, the case itself is more flush and flat in the rear

Microsoft Surface PRO 128GB user manual

The Microsoft Surface PRO, the full Windows 8 version of Microsofts Surface Tablet has hit local shelves at Php59,999 sans keyboard. The Php59,999 price does include a pen to manipulate the touchscreen, but getting the nicer Microsoft Surface Type Cover Keyboard will set you back another Php6,999. So the entire package of tablet, pen and keyboard will set Php66,998.

At that price you get a 10.6-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) display, a Core i5 processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 128 GB SSD. The 128 GB of storage can be expanded via a microSDXC card. This makes it the most powerful, but also the most expensive tablet in the market. But it will run all of your old Windows Vista and 7 apps.

At this price, I do not expect to see many Surface PROs to be sold in the Philippines. Still, high end Touchscreen Windows 8 devices are expensive, and this one seems to make more sense than a Acer Aspire S7, Asus Taichi or Sony Vaio 11 Duo. You may want to take a look at the MSI S20 Slider, which at Php49,900 is much cheaper, still the Microsoft Surface PRO is a much more portable device.

Lenovo P700 4 inch dual SIM Ice Cream Sandwich droid

Lenovo has released a new phone in the Philippine market, the Lenovo P700. The P700 is the most expensive phone Lenovo had released in the Philippine market, but it is also the most impressive.

Killer features at a glance

  • 4-inch 480 x 800 IPS display
  • Android 4.0 out of the box
  • Php10,999

It really comes down to those three. The screen, the operating system and the price. This is not the fist entry level Android we have seen with a 4-inch display. We do have the Cherry Mobile W900 at Php9,999 but that phone comes with Android 2.3 out of the box, and we still have no word whether it will get an update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

Next is Ice Cream Sandwich. If you got a Android 2.2 phone two years ago, it would have served you pretty well till now with software compatibility. Android 4.0 should do the same thing. Within the limits of the hardware, it will give you software compatibility with most apps for the next two years or so. In our latest smartphone buyers guide, we stopped recommending any Android phone that does not come, or upgradeable to Android 4.0.

Of course, there is the price. There are several phones in the market at a similar price point upgradeable to Android 4.0. The closest competitor that comes to mind is the Sony Xperia Neo V. But the Lenovo P700 has some features that make it a very good alternative.

It is par for the course for the price. The Lenovo P700, is a dual SIM phone. For many, that alone will make it a good choice. But actually we can ignore its dual SIM nature, and it still is an excellent choice.

The phone is powered by a 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, with PowerVR SGX531 graphics and 512 MB of RAM. That is as competitive with the other phones at this price point. The PowerVR SGX531 graphics chip is about equivalent to the graphics of an Apple iPhone 3GS or LG Optimus Black P970. Instead of the Qualcomm, Texas Instruments or Samsung chipsets we are used to, this one runs on a MediaTek chipset. This chipset while new in the market has been found on previous Lenovo and Alcatel phones and I know of no serious issues with the chipset.

Internal storage is 4GB of which we expect about 2.5 GB user available (we need to confirm this). Internal storage is expandable via MicroSD by another 32 GB. This is par for the course with other phones at this price point. It also has a 5MP auto focus camera, a front camera and can do 720 p video recording.

Basically, there is nothing in the specifications which disappoint. So you do not make any serious compromises in selecting this dual SIM phone instead of a single SIM unit.

The battery makes it a really interesting option. The phone comes with a 2500 mAh battery. That is the same size as you find on Samsung Galaxy Note. This is a lot larger than the 1200 mAh to 1500 mAh you find in phones at this price range. This promises good battery life and could be this phone killer feature.

A bit of a caveat. Phone design still counts. Some phones like the LG Optimus 4X HD has the same chipset as the HTC One X, similar specifications and a battery 20% larger. Despite the larger battery the LG Optimus 4X  HD but falls about 20% behind the HTC One X in terms of battery life (Source: GSM Arena).

We have to wait for some user feedback to see how good the endurance of this phone is. But from the specifications, it looks promising. If you get the Lenovo P700 you get a 1000 mAh Belkin external battery pack making the Php10,999 price really amazing.

We have to actually spend some time on this phone before we put it on our recommend list. Still, if you are buying a phone now at this price, you should give this one a long look.

Samsung Overtakes Nokia In 2012

This year has been a pretty rough year for Nokia and their stocks also hit a 14 year low. In the opposing side with Samsung, they are pretty much doing the opposite of Nokia by increasing the number of sales. The preliminary forecast rankings for the top cell phones manufacturers in 2012 is now out and for the first time in 14 years, Nokia steps down from the #1 spot with Samsung taking its place. The date shows that Samsung is expected to account for 29% of total cell phone sales and accounting 28% of the total smartphone sales. Nokia in the other hand is expected to account for 24% of total cell phones with only a mere 5% of the total smartphone sales. As the smartphone rage continues Apple and Samsung smartphones account for nearly 50% of the market with the other manufacturers having only a small piece.

Now Nokia Entre Into the Kitchen With the First Touch Screen Microwave Oven

We are delighted to announce a significant new extension to Nokia’s product offering with the Nokia 5AM-TH1N6 Constellation, a touch-screen microwave oven. The Constellation sets itself apart with a superfast, water-cooled 8-core high-voltage transformer, which brings a combined performance of 5,000 watts to end-users, letting them heat up turnkey meal solutions within seconds.

“Nokia has a proven track record and extensive IPR in working with microwave radios, so for us this was a logical next step. We can attack our competition in their core business,” says Olavi Huhtikuu, Nokia’s director of household innovation.

“That’s why we developed the highly innovative 5AM-TH1N6 Constellation, which will revolutionize everything from single households to canteen kitchens”

The new Nokia 5AM-TH1N6 has even more innovative features. The device comes with the latest eye-tracking technology, which stops the food from rotating when you look at it, and it automatically adjusts the temperature depending on how hungry you look.

Screen dream

In addition, the device has a highly sensitive touch display which can be operated with oven mitts, enabling you to conveniently select one of 25 different performance levels in order to heat up the 40-litre cooking chamber. Reflecting Nokia’s strong design heritage, the device comes in a variety of colors including blue cheese cyan, lemon yellow and liquorice black.

The product also comes with a selection of apps, sensors and a high-resolution PureFood camera that automatically shares pictures of ready meals with friends and family via social networks. People can also rate the food and comment immediately.

The Constellation will begin shipping in Q2 at a suggested retail price of €399 before taxes or subsidies. More models, including a mini variant targeted towards people with small appetites, and a 10-inch variant aimed at no one in particular, are also planned.
